Local conditions

Boulder sits where the plains meet the Flatirons, and that geography shapes the damage we see. Highway 93 south toward Golden and the Diagonal toward Longmont both carry gravel and aggregate trucks, and the oncoming lanes throw rock all year. Boulder Canyon, Lefthand Canyon, Sunshine Canyon, and Flagstaff Road add loose grit every time it rains or the plows come through.

Hail comes through Boulder County every summer, usually in late afternoon storms that build over the foothills and drift east across town. Cars parked on the open lots at CU, along Pearl Street, or in the big retail lots at 28th and 29th Street take the worst of it. Boulder's mix of older Subarus and new EVs means a large share of the windshields we replace need camera recalibration afterward.

Winter is the season for cracks spreading. Boulder gets dramatic temperature swings, sometimes 40 degrees between a sunny afternoon and a clear night, and the sand CDOT spreads on US-36 and Foothills Parkway chips glass all winter. A small star chip from a December commute on the Turnpike often runs into a full crack by February.
